I also want to volunteer at the orphanages in Guatemala for six months. Only one problem? I NEED TO BE ABLE TO SPEAK SPANISH!!

O.K fellow Brits. Take this advice and you'll save yourself a packet. I started learning Spanish 2 years ago. I think I have gone through just about every major Spanish learning course that I could get my hands on. Let me name them quickly for you. Maybe you yourself have given them a try. If so, you will have to agree with what I'm saying. How's this for a list:

Pimsleur: I spent a year working with Pimsleur 1,2,3 & Plus. Enjoyable and a great introduction to Spanish, but there were chunks of it I didn't understand. Felt I could not hold a conversation with anyone. I then went on to devour Michel Thomas. If you see what I mean. I began to understand more grammar, but with such a limited vocabulary I still couldn't hold down a conversation with anyone.

The rest: Rosetta Stone, Musical Spanish, Berlitz, Pasos, Hugo, Assimil, BBC Suenos, Linguaphone, Accelerated Learning and Spanish for Dummies.

Don't get me wrong, I learned something from most of these, but not enough to warrant the expenditure.

Anyhow, my point, (at last), is that the foregoing Spanish Language Courses were not for me. I even went to local evening classes for beginners and the classes were full of people who had obviously studied Spanish for some time and just wanted to show off. It made me feel very stupid indeed.

I happened on LSLC whilst Gooooogling on Christmas Day. I did a currency conversion from British pounds to U.S. dollars and I believe the download version came out at about £58. BARGAIN. We all like bargains don't we? No shipping, no customs charges, no VAT, nothing more, just £58. I have to admit that at the back of my mind I was thinking that you get what you pay for in this life so this is bound to be pants. But Hell, I was desperate.
At that price, I didn't have to tell anyone what a fool I was if I had made a mistake did I? So sneakily, right there and then, and without telling anyone, I paid for it online. Shhh.

So, Learning Spanish Like Crazy, what has it done for me? The very best thing of all is the lessons have given me confidence. They have given me confidence because I actually understand more of that grammar stuff because examples are given in an easy to understand way. And I am retaining it.

I have also surprised myself that I look forward to doing a lesson every day, because I now have the motivation.

If I were to get stuck, I know there is telephone support. Surprisingly for me, I haven't needed to use it yet so I can't comment on that. But I do know that when I have emailed the company I have always had a helpful, courteous response.

The transcripts. They enable me to check the few words I am unsure of on the recordings. I have not needed to use this more than a couple of times, but it is so reassuring to know that you can.

That initial £58 has been life-changing. Thank you Patrick, your dream has helped me on the road to attaining my dream. I have a long way to go towards Spanish fluency but I now have the confidence and the motivation to succeed.

It has been 40 years since I took high school Spanish. The neighborhood I grew up in had no Spanish speaking residents to converse with, and four years of classes did little to help in that regard. My vocabulary was filled to the brim and ability to conjugate verbs favorably; but that is like having a boat without water.

In my private practice, at church and as a musician, I now am in contact with a growing number of Hispanic people. They love life and are a wonderful family-oriented group to know.

I have tried other programs. I of course took high school Spanish one to two times about 20 years ago. And my motivation for getting better at Spanish was the fact that I volunteer twice a year in a Central American country to do medical care.

Standing next to me was the most beautiful Latin woman that I had ever seen. From the conversation that she was having with her female friend, I could tell that they were both native Latin Americans.

It was right after I said one of those two lines. That’s when it happened. Both women broke out in uncontrollable laughter. They were absolutely hysterical. I thought an ambulance was going to have to come and take them away if they didn’t stop laughing.

And I thought that someone was going to have to call a hearse for me – Because I was going to die from EMBARRASSMENT.

Are you familiar with the word GRINGO? Dictionary.com defines GRINGO as an “offensive term used in Latin America to describe an American or English person that attempts to speak Spanish”

I cannot remember a time in my entire life when I was more HUMILIATED and EMBARRASSED. It’s been well over two years. And to this day, I have not stepped foot back in that same movie theatre.

That same evening, I called a friend that’s a native speaker of Spanish and told him what had happened to me. After having to endure his cruel laughter for several minutes, he finally explained to me that the Spanish that I was “trying” to speak was so out-dated and so formal that it was ridiculous. And he must have meant the “ridiculous” part literally.

He also said that Latin Americans don’t speak that way. As he explained, maybe in some remote part of Spain there is an elite group of people that still uses that form of Spanish.

And with very few exceptions, there isn’t anyone on this side of the Atlantic that would say “Hablo Castellano” to mean “I speak Spanish.” And no Latin American would call popcorn "rosettas de maiz" – unless of course they were looking to make someone laugh hysterically.

My Latin American friend explained it to me another way too. He said that when he first arrived in the U.S., a learning-English course taught him to ask “How do you do?” in order to ask about someone’s health or when meeting someone for the first time.

But in his thirteen years of living in the U.S. no one ever asked him “How do you do?” It was either “How are you?” or "How you doing?"

Who knows? Maybe somewhere in England people still ask “How do you do?” But not in the U.S. where the majority of people that speak English live.

Of course they wanted to know what was I bringing to the table since I was making so many demands. What's my contribution? I'll share that with you right now . . .
